The National Congress Chamber Orchestra is a professional ensemble composed of some twenty string players. It was created in the year 1990, under the auspices of the Library of Congress; in 2000 it became dependent on both legislative Chambers, until today. Since its foundation, the Congress Chamber Orchestra has offered concerts with the most varied repertoire, covering from early music to contemporary creation, through representative works of different genres, without ever neglecting the Latin American repertoire.
Alongside his commitment to the highest artistic excellence, the Chamber Orchestra aims to make a constant formative work in the field of music for the benefit of its community. Moreover, since it belongs to a State power that has roots in the federal representation, the Orquesta intends to bring its music to all the territory of Argentina, by organizing tours through the various states of the Republic.
In August 2013, through an official tender –organized by the Chamber of Representatives in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra– maestro Sebastiano De Filippi was selected from more than seventy applicants as new Music Director of the ensemble. This new epoch gave an added value to the Orquesta, relaunched its activity on firm foundations and set out to reach the entire community. Since 2014 each year it offers an official season of concerts in the historical Pasos Perdidos Hall, in the Palace of the National Congress, performing with distinguished guest artists.
Recent engagements had the ensemble performing at Argentina’s main three stages: Teatro Colón, Centro Cultural Kirchner and Usina del Arte. In 2015 the National Congress Chamber Orchestra and its Music Director won the Stimulus Prize awarded by the Music Critics Association of Argentina, for the work done during the 2014 season. After that, the same Association named it “best Argentina chamber orchestra” of the 2017 and 2020 seasons.
“Under the direction of maestro De Filippi, the resident musical ensemble of the National Congress has returned to our cultural environment that essential level in a repertoire not covered by any other orchestra, with a programming criteria, rotation of soloists, and guest conductors that cannot be considered less than exemplary. […] The quality of soloists and programs places this group at a level comparable to any international orchestra of its rank.”
